MIT-MGH Clinical Neuroscience Fellowship 2012-2013

The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and Massachusetts General Hospital Clinical Neuroscience Fellowship Program

Available through the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at Massachusetts Institute for Technology, this award will provide a fellowship stipend for one to two years, effective July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. One to two awards will be awarded.

Award

In keeping with the intentions of the donor to create opportunities for advanced study and research in Neuroscience, and to serve as a bridge between clinical training and the development of a research career, full-time stipends will be awarded to eligible applicants (the 2012 stipend is $79,500). A full-time award is considered to represent at least 70% effort. To allow increased flexibility with respect to project time, the reviewing committee will consider a request to extend an award over one year continuing at the 70% effort, providing that the applicant and mentor provide a clear rationale and information on the applicant's plan for completion over the additional year period.  The award will cover 26% ($20,670) of the fringe benefits at the fellow’s institution, and will also cover $19,830 in supply costs; for a total of $120,000, without external financial support.

In the event that a fellow receives an NIH Career Development Award or some other significant support, which covers all or a portion of their salary, the fellow will be given up to $80,000 and be allowed some flexibility in how the $80,000 will be spent.  All options are, at the discretion of the Director of the Picower Institute.  Some of these options may include, but are not limited to technical assistant support, minor equipment support, research materials, etc.

It is expected that recipients will update the Research Committee by submitting a brief summary of progress statement on their funded research projects at six months after beginning the fellowship and a final written report at twelve months.

Review criteria for second year stipends will focus primarily on the training plan, quality and extent of mentoring, and the candidate’s potential to develop into a clinician-scientist.
